Healing Love [Short Story]

This is a story inspired from a true story of Korean pop star Kim Hyun Joong and his loving fans.
I also published this story on Wattpad here and I would really appreciate it if you check it out there and comment and rate it. Thank you

Under a cherry tree sat Hyun Ju, his eyes closed, and the gentle wind brushing his brown, shoulder length hair against his face. The white angel was playing his flute, so lost in his music that he didn’t notice that his lover, Yoon Ah, has arrived.

Yoon Ah took the chance that Hyun Ju didn’t notice her and embraced him from behind. He stopped playing his flute as he smiled with a fluttering heart in response to her sweet gesture, but he didn’t know she had another thing planned in mind. She summoned a small black arrow and just when he was about to turn his head towards her, she stabbed his heart with it.

“No… it can’t… it can’t be…please let it not be.” Hyun Ju thought to himself as he gasped and screamed in pain, not believing what just happened. This could only mean that Yoon Ah is a dark angel who’s pretending to be a creature of light, but the thought of it made him hurt even more.

He watched her disappear into black smoke as he moaned in pain, shock, and disbelief before finally collapsing on the ground, yearning for this nightmare to be over soon.

In Angelica, Jeong Mi could feel Hyun Ju was hurt. She teleported to where he was to see what was wrong with him. She gasped as if someone had stabbed her own heart when she saw him collapsed on the ground suffering through his injury.

She quickly kneeled beside him, patted his arm and tried to assure him: “It’s okay.. it’s going to be okay!” and teleported him back to Angelica to be treated by the Guardian.

“Guardian, Help!” Jeong Mi called the Guardian in a panicked voice as she brought in Hyun Ju and placed him onto her examination table.
“OH!! How did you know he was hurt?” the Guardian was surprised that Jeong Mi found Hyun Ju before her.
“I could feel he was hurt, so I teleported to where he was and found him like this in Floriana.”
“You… felt he was hurt!!” exclaimed the Guardian who became even more surprised.
“Yes!” the young angel replied, wondering why the Guardian was so surprised.

The Guardian had to ignore the strange fact that Jeong Mi could feel Hyun Ju was hurt and focus on treating him.

It didn’t take her a few seconds to figure out what happened, but it felt like ages to Jeong Mi. She watched the Guardian closely the entire time till she finally showed a pained expression on her face and explained: “A dark angel betrayed his love and stabbed his heart with a poisoned arrow.”

Jeong Mi gasped upon hearing the Guardian’s words, covering her mouth with both of her hands in shock and her tears started to flow down her cheeks.

To Hyun Ju, who was still conscious, the Guardian’s words were like insult to injury; he let out a pained moan and more tears overflew from his eyes as he could still not believe that Yoon Ah is a dark angel.

“But..why?... Why would they do that?” Jeong Mi asked in tears.
The Guardian sighed and answered: “Because it’s so hard for them to hurt white angels during missions, because of our foreknowing. However, in love, a white angel may not pay much attention to his or her foreknowing, giving dark angels a chance to deceive them and attack the most vulnerable part of a white angel…the heart.”

For Hyun Ju, it was far too painful for him to hear all this, he just found out that his lover is a dark angel!

Jeong Mi felt her heart receiving another stab upon hearing those words. In an effort to stay positive, she quickly calmed herself down and asked: “What’s the treatment then?”

The Guardian’s heart ached for Jeong Mi; the young inexperienced angel sill doesn’t understand the meaning of her words.

Looking pained, the Guardian let out a long sigh then looked at Hyun Ju, caressed his face in the most loving, motherly way and explained to him: “Unfortunately.. because you were hurt by love... only true love will be able to heal you.”

Hearing this, Hyun Ju felt like he was tossed in a dark place with no way out and no one could see him or hear him cry for help. How is he going to find true love now? When the only love he thought would never hurt him is the one who put him through this suffering.

“You have three days before the poison completely consumes your heart.” the Guardian pointed out.
“I am so sorry my dear, but there is nothing I can do.” she cried as she caressed his face.

Hyun Ju understood he was in trouble as a result of ignoring his foreknowing. He remembered when it wondered why Yoon Ah always insisted on meeting in a place where both good and evil can exist and not Angelica or any other place of light. He regretted not listening to the obvious signs it told him about her, but it was too late now and he had no choice but to accept the consequences.

As he could hardly speak, he struggled to apologize: “aah…I’m sorry... I didn’t mean… to be irresponsible.”

“No. No. Never. You are not irresponsible, it’s not your fault.” the Guardian quickly assured him with her caring, motherly like voice and caresses.

Jeong Mi, however, stood there speechless and shocked; she couldn’t believe this was actually happening to Hyun Ju.

The Guardian and Jeong Mi helped teleport Hyun Ju back to his place in Angelica to spend his last days resting and prepare for farewell to all the other angels.

The rest of the angels in Angelica could not stay still and just watch while one of the most gifted and talented angles among them die. They gathered and tried to find a love match for Hyun Ju to save him.

They found few angles who could be his true match and went to Hyun Ju’s place. One after another, they tried to heal him and take out the poisoned arrow but they couldn’t do it.

Finally, it was Jeong Mi’s turn, pressure was so strong on her, she was his last hope and everyone was having high hopes that somehow a miracle would happen and she would be able to take out the arrow and save him.

Kneeling across from Hyun Ju who seems to have gotten used to the pain now, Jeong Mi placed her right hand over his heart and before she began, she softly looked into his eyes and tried to assure him: “Just try to relax and not resist, okay?” He nodded in response.

Jeong Mi then closed her eyes and took a deep breath and summoned her healing light. A white light came out of Jeong Mi’s hand and penetrated Hyun Ju’s heart, causing him to grunt a little. All Jeong Mi’s healing light could do was to diminish the effect of the poison, but without removing the arrow, the poison kept coming back. With all her might, she tried to take out the arrow but she couldn’t even make it move. She didn’t want to disappoint everyone and mostly, Hyun Ju himself, so she pushed herself even harder but still failed.

She sighed as she hunched her back, looking down towards the ground, frustrated at her inability to heal him. She lifted her eyes towards his and apologized in tears: “I’m so sorry.”

He gave her a faint smile as he shaked his head and replied: “It’s okay.” He then patted her arm in an attempt to make her feel less bad about it.

“You cannot make yourself love someone. You either love them or you don’t” the Guardian’s voice came from behind explaining why their efforts did not work.

In sadness and disappointment, they gave up and consoled Hyun Ju. Hyun Ju, however, wasn’t disappointed as he didn’t expect there would be anyone who would truly love him so sincerely and intensely the same way he loved Yoon Ah. He started preparing himself for final farewell to his fellow angels as he had only one day left.

That night, alone in her place, Jeong Mi cried her heart out, thinking about all what happened and that she was about to lose Hyun Ju. She loved him so much, but the fact that her love wasn’t true enough to save him tortured her the entire night.

Suddenly, a familiar sound rang at the entrance of her place, it was the Guardian, but what brings her now? Jeong Mi rushed to the door to welcome the Guardian.

“Peace and Love, Jeong Mi.”
“Peace and Love..Guardian.” Jeong Mi replied in a depressed, lazy voice, still dwelling on losing Hyun Ju.

The Guardian knew how Jeong Mi spent her night, so she got straight to the point: “Listen, I came here to ask you to try to heal Hyun Ju one more time.”

“But Guardian, I… I tried.. and it didn’t work.” Jeong Mi cried, remembering her failure.

“I know, but my dear, you’re still young and still haven’t perfected your skill yet.” The Guardian pointed out.
“Remember when you could feel he was injured and beat me to him? Only I am able to know the feelings and thoughts of an angel, but you could feel him! And that means you were well connected to him which means you truly love him.” she continued, reminding Jeong Mi of her surprising connection with Hyun Ju.

The Guardian’s words got Jeong Mi’s attention; she looked into her eyes before looking away, remembering when she first felt Hyun Ju’s distress and how the Guardian was so surprised that she could feel him.

“You still haven’t perfected your skill yet, Jeong Mi and I think that’s only reason why you couldn’t heal him the first time. Just.. try one more time.” the Guardian pleaded.

Jeong Mi looked at her with teary eyes, desperately wanting her words to be true. She walked into the Guardian’s embrace and cried: “But what if my love is really not true enough?”
“Then… you’ve at least tried, my dear.” The Guardian patted Jeong Mi’s head, trying to sooth her fear.

Jeong Mi let go of the Guardian’s embrace, looking at her and sobbing a little, thinking about what she was saying.

“You know there isn’t much time left.” The Guardian hinted at the fact that Hyun Ju will die soon if she doesn’t at least try one more time to save him.

At that moment, Jeong Mi realized that Hyun Ju will still die if she doesn’t try, she might as well give it her all in this last time.

“Just think about your love for him and let that be the source of your strength, only love will heal. Okay?” the Guardian put both of her hands on top of Jeong Mi’s arms, encouraging her.

Jeong Mi could finally see that her last trial is Hyun Ju’s only hope, so she excused herself and teleported to Hyun Ju’s place as he had only a few hours left.

When she arrived at his place, she realized that it has changed; the same place that was once full of life lifting music that Hyun Ju used to play with his flute, is now all silent; and the beautiful plants and flowers he grew in his garden, are now almost dead; even the ever blossoming cherry tree was also dying. It was like life was leaving everything that belonged to him just as it was leaving him.

As she focused back on what was happening, she found that he has finished his farewell to the fellow angels and was saying the final goodbye to his best friend before he left.

When Hyun Ju saw her at the entrance of his place, he gave her a faint smile and greeted her:

“Peace and Love”
“Peace and Love” she replied with an unsure gaze as she wasn’t really sure if there was going to be any peace and love.
“Come in” Hyun Ju invited her into his place.

She walked in straight towards him until there were only a few centimeters between them. She paused for a second to mentally prepare herself for what she was about to see then lifted her hand up towards him and grabbed the edge of his upper garment. As she was about to open it, he quickly grabbed her hand and stopped her.

“What are you doing?” he asked in surprise.
Jeong Mi was startled a bit. She looked up towards him and replied: “just one more time… let me try one more time.”

Hyun Ju sighed before responding: “You tried before… it’s not going to work.”
“Please, let me go in peace” he pleaded.

“The guardian said I may not have been able to heal you the first time because I’m still young and haven’t perfected my skills yet.” she tried to convince him that there might be a possibility of healing if he let her try again.
“Just one more time, please… I will not forgive myself if I don’t…please.” Jeong Mi desperately pleaded.

He let out a long sigh as he gazed into her eyes; his foreknowing told him to let her try. He tilted his head down, grabbing his upper garment for a second and on an exhale, he opened it, revealing his heart to her.

Even though Jeong Mi expected what she was seeing, still, her heart ached at the sight of his heart, now almost completely consumed by the poison in an almost complete black color as if it was set on fire. She put one hand on his face to comfort him and assured: “It’s going to be okay.”

He looked at her with watery eyes, unsure but wishing her words to be true.

She had him sit on the ground and embraced him from behind with her left forearm across his shoulder blades, holding him tight with her left hand over his right shoulder.

“This is just in case you resist, okay?” she explained.

He nodded, took a deep breath and surrendered to her embrace, trying his best to relax so he doesn’t resist.

Jeong Mi then placed her right hand over his heart, took a deep breath, and the white light came out of her hand again and penetrated him, causing him to grunt.

Jeong Mi’s healing light started to diminish the poison, and suddenly, he started screaming and crying in agony, moving hard and fighting Jeong Mi’s grip as if he wishes her to stop the healing.

“It’s coming out! It’s coming out! Hold on. Just a bit more.” Jeong Mi tried to calm him down as she struggled to keep him in her grip and continue the healing.

“God,” Jeong Mi screamed, calling upon the divine to give her strength to take out the arrow. At that moment, she remembered what the guardian told her and focused on her love for Hyun Ju, clearing her mind of anything but love for him.

It wasn’t long before the divine pink light of love started to flow through Jeong Mi and from her to her healing light, turning it into the same color of pink. And after a few seconds the black poisoned arrow came out just when Hyun Ju could finally free himself from Jeong Mi’s grip, pushing her slightly to the side and causing the healing to stop.

It felt like time slowed down as Hyun Ju watched the arrow dissolve into black smoke, not believing it was really out.

As for Jeong Mi, she shed tears of relief; her love was actually true enough to save him. She moved to face him so she can complete healing the remains of the stab wound and the poison.

“It’s over! The difficult part is over!!” Jeong Mi comforted Hyun Ju who was still moaning in pain.

Hyun Ju watched Jeong Mi as she was finishing the healing with tears of relief, gratitude, and love flowing down his cheeks. She rid him from the excruciating pain he had to endure and saved him from inevitable death.

As Jeong Mi finished the healing, she closed Hyun Ju’s garment and placed her hand on top of it over his heart as if to seal the healing and to assure him that the full healing is done. Then, she lifted her head up and looked into his eyes, softly smiling, she wished she had confessed her love earlier and saved him from being deceived by that evil creature.

Hyun Ju, however, wondered why he didn’t notice Jeong Mi before. Was it because she was his trainee? And still young? He doesn’t know. But now, he realized that she is his true love who would never hurt him and will always be by his side.

They watched as life came back to his place, growing the plants and new cherry blossoms were blossoming.

Hyun Ju smiled at Jeong Mi then stood up, taking her hand that was on his heart and pulled her towards him, helping her stand up and face him. He embraced her, pressing her head against his chest as if he was thanking her. It was perfect for her as she lost herself in his heartbeat, now sounding relieved and free. Then he kissed her forehead before giving her a kiss on the lips as she wrapped her arms around his neck.

“I love you.”
“I love you, too.”

They vowed to nurture each other and be each other’s comfort and strength as they continued expressing love to each other, melting into each other and forgetting all about the past. Little by little, everything ceased to exist and it was as if there were only the two of them in the universe. They joined in a sacred union that no one can set apart.
